The App Store is an app store platform for mobile apps on the iOS and iPadOS operating systems, developed and maintained by Apple Inc. On this store, users can browse and download approved apps developed within Apple’s iOS software development kit. Apps can be downloaded onto the iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad, and some can be migrated to the Apple Watch smartwatch or fourth-generation and later Apple TV as extensions of iPhone apps.
The App Store opened on July 10, 2008, with an initial 500 applications available. The number of apps peaked at about 2.2 million in 2017, but then declined slightly over the following years as Apple began a process of removing old apps or 32-bit apps that did not function as intended or did not comply with current app guidelines. As of 2021, the store has more than 1.8 million apps.
Apple has emphasized the App Store’s role in creating new jobs in the “app economy,” claiming to have paid developers over $155 billion, [2] but the App Store has also faced criticism from developers and government regulators for being run monopolistically and for Apple’s 30% revenue share being excessive. In October 2021, the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) concluded that in-app commissions from Apple’s App Store are anti-competitive and required Apple to change its in-app payment system policies.
